Air France-KLM bets on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)

6 Dec 2024 | Airlines

Air France-KLM (AFKL) is committed to minimizing its environmental impact and aims to play a leading role in the integration of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, or SAF, while facilitating the advancement of SAF production capabilities worldwide.

SAF comes from non-fossil resources, such as used cooking oil or agricultural waste. They represent one of the most promising strategies for achieving a reduction in CO₂ emissions of at least 75% throughout their lifecycle.

By 2030, we plan to use 10% sustainable aviation fuels on our flights, thereby exceeding the requirements set by the European Commission. Air France-KLM is committed to offering its customers the opportunity to participate in the decarbonization of aviation.
The Group has launched several industry-leading programs and initiatives, in addition to the SAF contribution already included in every ticket sold since January 2022.

Individuals and companies can contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions through the Extra SAF bundle, an optional environmental option offered by travel agencies.
This comprehensive offer is presented early in the booking process, at the stage when passengers choose their fare. It combines one of Air France-KLM’s fare options with that of SAF, enabling customers to contribute a certain percentage of the cost of the fuel used for their flight to the acquisition and development of SAF.

The volume of SAF included in the bundle price corresponds to a certain percentage of the total fuel calculated for the flight or itinerary chosen by the customer, so that the actual contribution is proportional to each customer’s trip. The Extra SAF bundle is available in all classes of travel, and Flying Blue members can earn XP points with their SAF purchase. These XP points will enable them to maintain or improve their membership status.
