The Electronic Travel Authorization will be mandatory starting April 2, 2025.
The United Kingdom has opened applications for its new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. From April 2, 2025, European travelers wishing to enter the UK must apply for an ETA before departure.
A simplified digital process
Starting in early April, the ETA will become mandatory for all visa-exempt visitors. This initiative is part of the UK government’s efforts to modernize and digitize its border control system.
Applications can be submitted via the UK ETA app, allowing travelers to receive a response within minutes. For those without a smartphone, applications can also be completed on the official website gov.uk. However, due to high demand, the website may experience waiting times.
Required formalities before traveling
To obtain an ETA, travelers must provide biographical and biometric data and answer a few additional questions, as reported by L’Echo Touristique. Once approved, the authorization is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport.
Validity and cost of the ETA
The ETA allows multiple visits to the UK, with a maximum stay of six months per visit over a two-year period. Currently, the ETA costs £10, but an increase to £16 is being considered.
